Are Comments Good For SEO?

It is a known fact on the internet that one of the best ways to boost your presence is through SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). The most commonly used form of SEO is through guest blogging where you create an article for another blog on the basis you get a link back to your site. This is a 100% guaranteed way of improving your SEO if the website your guest blogging on is of any decency. However, after using SEOmoz, I have wondered whether guest posts are worth it and if comments do the job of improving SEO just as well as guest blogging…

It all started when I checkout out my SEOmoz rank on BuySellAds here:

What I saw that the links to my website from comments had more page/domain authority than the guest posts I’m doing. This made me think, ‘if comments link back to your site and improve my SEO and website authority, I should comment everywhere!’

That is where I’m wrong.

So Why Does it Not Count?

Google have listed links into two categories: follow links and no-follow links.

A Follow Link is a link on another website of which has been ‘paid’ for (when I say paid, I mean it’s worthy to be there). These are links Google values when determining a website’s pagerank etc…

A No-Follow Link is a link which has no value because it has not been paid for or isn’t worthy to be there. Such links includes comments and other methods which force links to go onto other websites.

Now, if you look at my SEOmoz rank, you will see that only two of my top five links are actually Follow or DoFollow links while the rest are No-Follow.

What Can We Learn From This?

  • Do not use comments as a form of SEO. They are completely pointless and are a waste of time. The only reason to comment is to interact with others and for short traffic boosts. Look at my article on why you should comment on other blogs.
  • When you are guest blogging, make sure the link they have put in your guest post is DoFollow otherwise all that time in writing the guest post will be for a No-Follow link!
  • If you want a quick and easy way to increase SEO, blog! Content is King.
